Cingular has patented emoticons! The ridiculous part isn't Cingular's request for the patent but the fact that the patent office actually gave it to them. Even though the bulk of the patent refers to sending graphical "smilies" to mobile phones (via SMS), it does cover using text smilies over sms too! SMS is basically just email sent to a mobile device...and people have been using smiles in email for more than 20 years now. This is almost as retarded as Microsoft trying to patent the process of browsing a webpage using only the keyboard, which was happening on unix systems 10 years before microsoft even existed.
